Frequently Asked Counselling & Therapy Questions

FAQ's

  • Is there a difference between counselling and therapy?
The terms are often used interchangeably. In practice, both focus on helping you work through challenges, but “therapy” may suggest deeper, long-term work while “counselling” can be more short-term or solution-focused. At Safe Nest, I meet you where you're at, no labels needed.
  • Is therapy or counselling for me?
If you're feeling overwhelmed, stuck, disconnected, or unsure about what to do next, it’s probably worth talking to someone. You don’t need to be in crisis. Therapy can be a space to check in, explore what’s going on, and figure out how to move forward.
  • What is your approach?
I combine evidence-based methods like EFT (Emotionally Focused Therapy), CBT, DBT, and the Gottman Method with a grounded, honest style of support. That means real conversations, practical tools, and no fluff.
  • Do you offer virtual sessions?
Yes, I offer secure virtual sessions for clients anywhere in BC. It’s the same level of care, just from the comfort of your home or office.
  • How much do your sessions cost?
The rates depend on the type and length of session. Standard Individual Sessions: $170/ 50 mins ( tax included) Standard Couples/Family Sessions: $250/ 75 mins ( tax included) Group Sessions: Please contact to discuss. Please visit the Rates Page for up-to-date information.
  • Does BC Medical cover counselling services?
Unfortunately, counselling provided by a Registered Clinical Counsellor (RCC) is not covered by MSP. However, many extended health plans do provide coverage, be sure to check with your provider.
  • What does a typical couples session look like?
We’ll explore your current dynamic, patterns that may be showing up, and what each of you wants from the relationship. We use structured tools (like the Gottman Method) to guide the process, with plenty of room for real talk.
  • What if my partner doesn’t want to come?
It’s common for one partner to be unsure or hesitant. We can start with whoever is ready, and go from there. Sometimes just one person showing up creates positive shifts.
  • Do you allow more than 2 people in a session?
Yes. Family sessions can include multiple members depending on the needs of the situation. We’ll talk about what structure makes sense and who should be involved.
  • Do you work with couples at all stages?
Absolutely. I support couples who are dating, engaged, married, or navigating separation. You don’t have to be in crisis, sometimes a check-in or tune-up can make a big difference.
  • Will you take sides during couples sessions?
No. The goal isn’t to blame, it’s to understand what’s happening between you, and to build new ways of relating. We focus on the relationship, not who’s “right.”
  • What happens in our first session?
We’ll talk about what brought you in, what you’d like support with, and how we’ll work together. It’s a chance to get to know each other and see if it feels like a good fit.
  • Can I do therapy even if I’m not in crisis?
Yes. Therapy isn’t just for breakdowns, it’s also for check-ins, growth, and processing life’s everyday challenges.
  • Do you work with men?
Yes, and many men who are new to therapy find this space comfortable, practical, and non-judgmental. We’ll go at a pace that works for you. I've worked exclusively in Men's mental health for 12 years.
  • Do you work with neurodivergent clients?
Yes! I offer affirming support for ADHD, autism, and other neurodivergent experiences. Therapy is always adapted to fit you, not the other way around.
  • What can I talk about in individual sessions?
Anything that’s on your mind. Some clients come in for relationship issues, others for anxiety, stress, or burnout. There’s no “right” reason to start therapy, if something’s feeling off, we’ll work through it together.
